floor below her. He wanted to be close by, just in case she needed him.
Thinking about all she'd told him while they sat together in front of the fire, a long time passed before he fell into an uneasy sleep. Then he'd dreameda strange, confusing, beautiful dream.
D.J. was surrounded by a field of wildflowers. The violet, white, and orange blossoms shone in the bright sunlight. Her hair had grown to her shoulders and curled in abandon about her face. She wore a flowing dresslong and old-fashioned, with a lace-trimmed scoop neck. A totally un-D.J.like dress, but for some reason it fit her. The colors of the material reminded Chris of late autumnmuted red, burnt orange, amber. She was the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen.
But the strangest aspect of the dream was the children who followed in her waketwo young boys, perhaps eight and nine, with dark curling hair and bright blue eyes, and a little girl, about four, with long red hair and a dress that matched D.J.'s. The child ran after the boys, who in turn followed D.J. as they made their way across the field, picking flowers. The little girl's laugh still rang in Christian's earslike sleigh bells echoing in the frosty air.
When he woke on the floor in the morning the dream lingered in his mind. The little boys had looked enough like him and the girl like D.J. for Christian to understand the implications. What confused him was the longing that possessed him to make the dream his reality.
